BACKBONES is working on expanding our Board of Directors! We have fun while we work hard!

BACKBONES was born when friends and family of Reveca Torres started a fundraising campaign to help pay for medical expenses after a spinal cord injury. Reveca soon realized the importance of a support system to help reach one’s goals after an injury and the positive impact others with similar injuries had on her through motivation and confidence that couldn’t be found elsewhere.

Today, BACKBONES is a nationally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization that exists to help people with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) and their families connect with their communities.

We deliver on that mission by creating events and experiences that promote awareness and engage people of all abilities. Recent examples include:

  • Hosted Reinventing the Wheel art exhibits
  • Hosting the ReelAbilities Film Festival in Chicago in 2015 and 2017
  • Active participation in United Spinal Association’s Roll on Capitol Hill
  • Local events ranging from wine tastings to professional sporting events
  • Annual 5K Run/Walk/Roll
  • ConnectNight in Nashville and Atlanta (new in 2017)
  • Ongoing activity on social media platforms and at backbonesonline.com

BACKBONES has established a strong reputation through the tireless efforts of Reveca (Executive Director), our volunteer board of directors and ambassadors, and regular outreach nationwide through a wide range of activities, including regular participation in Abilities Expos. Reveca was even recognized by New Mobility Magazine as 2016 Person of the Year, in large part for her leadership of BACKBONES.

During the past year, Reveca has worked with the board of directors and key volunteers to undertake a strategic planning process that will set a course for BACKBONES to bring its unique brand of connection more effectively to more people, in more communities. We are now working to identify individuals to work with us to implement that strategy, including serving as Community Ambassadors or on our expanding Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors is responsible for working with the executive director to set strategic direction for, and to govern, the organization. Our board is also a “working board”, so members are expected to take an active role in one or more areas of organizational activity. While we’re a national organization, we meet and work primarily via telephone and internet communications.

If you are someone who knows our community and could be a good fit with BACKBONES please consider getting involved and giving your time and skills to help BACKBONES fulfill its mission.
