After becoming paralyzed and working as a Peer Mentor at Schwab Rehab in Chicago, Michelle Henton decided to continue her education to become a Psychologist. Michelle enjoyed peer mentoring and wanted to continue helping people and make a difference in the disability community.

SIBLINGS: There are 3 of us. I have an older brother and a sister.

CHILDREN: No children. 

CURRENT RESIDENCE: Chicago, IL 

EDUCATION/DEGREES: Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology and Bachelors in Psychology

ACCOMPLISHMENTS YOU’RE PROUD OF? I am most proud of being in the Honors Society while in school, receiving both degrees, and giving the keynote speech at graduation.

TELL US HOW YOU GOT STARTED IN YOUR OCCUPATION: I began my occupation due to losing my position as a peer mentor at Schwab Rehabilitation. I felt a need to make a difference in my life and wanted to continue helping others so decided to go back to school for my Bachelor in Psychology, and to continue my education to receive my Master in Clinical Psychology.

DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR? WHO? WHY? I did have a mentor, Arlena Sims was my mentor. I feel having a mentor was good for me because she helped me physically,by showing me my strengths and acceptance of having a SCI. I also feel observing her motivated me to become a peer mentor and help motivate others. We are still friends today.

DO YOU OWN A CAR? DRIVE? WHAT’S YOUR SET-UP? I don’t drive but I’m looking forward to learning. I get rides from family members or I use ADA ParaTransit for my transportation needs and sometimes public transportation.

DO YOU HAVE A PET? WHAT? Yes, 2 cats

DO YOU HAVE A HOBBY?IF SO PLEASE EXPLAIN: I love doing make-up on others and myself. I also love attending Broadway shows.

HOW HAVE YOU SPENT YOUR FREE TIME DURING THE PANDEMIC: I spent my free time reading and watching reality TV shows.

SHORT TERM GOAL : My short term goal is to take a licensure test to become a licensed professional counselor.

LONG TERM GOAL: To purchase an accessible ranch style home.
